Behavior Analyst Certification Board Requirements and Standards

Date: 04/05/18

Effective January 1, 2018, California Health & Wellness (CHWP) and participating direct network physicians must meet and comply with the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) requirements and standards described in California Health and Safety Code section 1374.73 and California Insurance Code section 10144.51 as amended by the passage of Assembly Bill (AB) 1074. These rules of participation apply to behavioral health treatment and services related to pervasive developmental disorder, autism and applied behavioral analysis (ABA).

CHWP participating providers who use qualified autism professionals and qualified autism paraprofessionals under a treatment plan prescribed by and supervised by a qualified autism service provider must also comply with and meet the requirements, which include, but are not limited to, background checks, adequate education, such as minimum certification or degree, including competency-based training and/or behavioral health work experience as outlined under the laws, rules and regulations of California.

If your office employs or supervises qualified autism professionals and qualified autism paraprofessionals for behavioral health treatment and services, then the minimum criteria must be met when providing behavioral health treatment for pervasive developmental disorder, autism spectrum disorders (ASDs) or ABA. The rules of participation and minimum criteria for qualified autism professionals and qualified autism paraprofessionals have been added to the CHWP Provider Manual, available in the Provider Resources section of the www.CAHealthwellness.com website.

Thank you in advance for ensuring your office complies with and meets the state laws, regulations and rules of participation that were implemented on January 1, 2018, as they apply to behavioral health treatment and services. We appreciate your participation with CHWP.
